Certain hunters spend thousands of dollars to fill tags of big and "impressive" animals. But these animals are not just big elk or deer. In fact, approximately 1,200 different species are hunted for trophies, including the big five from Africa: Lions, Leopards, Rhinos, Buffalos and Elephants. Not only are these animals hunted but around 1.26 million animal trophies were brought into the U.S. within 2005 to 2014. (Humane Society)
Cecil The Lion's Experience
Cecil was a stunning attraction to the Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, until July 2015. At this point an American dentist paid roughly $55,000 to use a bow an arrow to hunt Cecil. Upon coming across the male lion Walter Palmer stuck Cecil with a single arrow, injuring but not downing him. Actman and Zwirz both agree that Palmer then hunted Cecil for 10 to 12 hours before finally finishing him with another arrow. Reference the video below for more information regarding the organization that sold Cecil's tag to Palmer.
